July 21, 2026

Barrow Town Council is delighted to announce that the Nao Santa María will be visiting the Royal Port of Barrow for the very first time this August, giving residents and visitors a unique opportunity to step aboard one of history’s most famous sailing ships.

The Nao Santa María is a remarkable replica of Christopher Columbus’ flagship and is currently touring ports across the United Kingdom, bringing maritime history to life for thousands of visitors.

As part of its UK tour, the ship will arrive in Barrow, where the crew are looking forward to receiving a warm Cumbrian welcome.

To mark the occasion, an official opening ceremony will take place on Thursday 27th August at 10:00am, bringing together civic representatives and invited guests to celebrate the vessel’s inaugural visit to the Royal Port of Barrow.

The visit presents a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Barrow’s proud maritime heritage and its longstanding connection with the sea. Visitors will have the chance to experience the impressive vessel up close, learn about life aboard a 15th-century sailing ship and discover more about one of the most significant voyages in world history.

Barrow Town Council is pleased to welcome the Nao Santa María and its crew to the town, from 27th to 31st August, and hopes residents, schools and visitors from across the region will take the opportunity to experience this exciting event.

We look forward to welcoming the Nao Santa María to the Royal Port of Barrow and making its first visit to our town a memorable one.
