It has been a full and rewarding week for the Mayor of Barrow, Cllr Fred Chatfield, and the Mayoress, Mrs Liz Chatfield, who have attended a number of events throughout the town — from military commemorations to community celebrations and educational achievements.
⚓️ Trafalgar Parade and Church Service – Sunday 19th October
The week began with the annual Trafalgar Parade and Church Service, to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar.
The Mayor and Mayoress joined veterans, civic guests, local cadets, and representatives from the Armed Forces for the parade from Barrow Town Hall to St George’s Church. Following a moving service, the parade returned to the Town Hall, with proud displays of respect and remembrance throughout.
The Mayor said:
“It was a great honour to take part in the Trafalgar Day commemorations. The parade and service are a wonderful reminder of our town’s naval heritage and of the continuing connection between Barrow and our Armed Forces. My thanks go to everyone who took part and supported the event.”
⚓️ Trafalgar Ball at Barrow Town Hall – Tuesday 21st October
On Tuesday evening, the Mayor and Mayoress were honoured guests at the Trafalgar Ball held in the Banqueting Hall at Barrow Town Hall, hosted by the combined messes of HMS Agamemnon, HMS Achilles, and HMS Dreadnought.
The Mayor commented on the night; “It was our honour and pleasure to accept the kind invitation to join them for their Trafalgar Night Dinner in the splendid surroundings of the Town Hall.
As always, their hospitality was generous, with excellent food and service provided by the Town Hall catering team. Together with great company and good cheer, everyone enjoyed a fantastic evening.”
🎓 Furness Academy Annual Awards Evening – Thursday 23rd October
On Thursday evening, the Mayor and Mayoress attended the Furness Academy Annual Awards, celebrating the outstanding achievements of pupils across the school.
“We were so pleased to see and meet so many highly academic students who have achieved so much and were there to receive their well-deserved recognition.
There was also a wonderful musical interlude from former student Harrison Quary on piano — a very talented young man we’ve had the pleasure of listening to before.
Thank you to Furness Academy for a lovely evening.”
The Mayor was also delighted to meet Olly Hopkins, who received a Physics Award for his exceptional performance.
💼 King’s Fund ‘Move Into Work’ Presentations – Friday 24th October
On Friday morning, the Mayor visited The Bridge in Portland Walk for the King’s Fund Move Into Work presentations — a programme designed to help unemployed young people and those seeking to advance their careers.
“This three-week intensive course, both in the classroom and in the workplace, supports individuals looking to gain employment, with many hoping to join BAE Systems, who work alongside Jobcentre work coaches to deliver this initiative.
Each delegate made an excellent short speech about themselves and their experience on the course, offering heartfelt thanks to those who supported them.
It was my great pleasure to present their certificates.”
⚓️ Barrow Sea Cadets Trafalgar Ball – Friday 24th October
Later that evening, the Mayor and Mayoress attended the Barrow Sea Cadets Trafalgar Ball at The Fairfield, organised by Cllr Niyall Phillips, in support of the Barrow Sea Cadets.
“It was our pleasure to join the Barrow Sea Cadets for their Trafalgar Ball, where everyone came together to support and raise money for them.
This year’s event was honoured by the attendance of Captain Neil Downing, who gave the Toast to Nelson.
We enjoyed excellent food, great company, and another thoroughly enjoyable evening.”
🎃 Autumn Fest in Barrow Town Centre – Saturday 25th October
The week concluded with the Autumn Fest in Barrow town centre, a fantastic event organised by Barrow BID. The Mayor and Mayoress were delighted to attend and to raise funds throughout the day for their two chosen charities — Love Barrow Families and Mind in Furness.
“A huge thank you to Barrow BID, who kindly allowed us to hold a collection for our charities, and to their wonderful team for all their support on the day.
Our thanks also go to the members of Love Barrow Families and Mind in Furness, who helped make it possible.
Finally, a HUGE thank you to the great people of Barrow for your generous donations — you were all amazing! You raised an impressive amount for our charities, and most of all, the children had a fantastic day.”

“It has been a truly memorable week for both Liz and me. We’ve met so many wonderful people and seen the very best of Barrow’s community spirit in action — from our schools and armed forces to our charities and volunteers. We are deeply grateful for the warmth, kindness, and support shown to us everywhere we go.”
